Description
12 7ton all iron Gunpowder vans were built between 1904 and 1912. These vans were basically a copy of the GWR Z1 Gunpowder van with LSWR fittings. Initially they were painted a dull vermillion but by World War 1 they were being painted in the standard LSWR freight brown livery. They were all taken into Southern Railway ownership in 1923 where if they hadn’t already been painted brown they would have been shortly there after. All 12 managed to pass to British Railways in 1947 with most being withdrawn in the mid 1950’s. If British Railways bothered to repaint them they would have been into their unfitted goods livery of light grey.
Known LSWR running numbers: 1296; 1350; 1361; 1375; 1904; 2134; 2154; 6157
SR running numbers 61201-61212
British railways just added a S prefix to the SR number
2134 was withdrawn from revenue service, by British Rlys, in 1953
